National

The public, especially those living in flood-hit areas, are reminded to always take precautionary measures to prevent any accidents, injuries and the risk of spreading infectious diseases. The advice was issued by the Ministry of Health following very active weather conditions that caused several areas in the country to be hit by floods.

Among the health and safety measures that need to be taken during and after floods: ensuring that the water supply is clean and uncontaminated; drinking bottled water or ensuring that the water is safe to drink and boiled with beforehand; cooking all food thoroughly; prioritising personal hygiene, especially washing hands with clean water and soap before eating, after using the toilet and if exposed to flood water; maintaining the cleanliness of the living environment and nearby areas and not throwing garbage everywhere, ensuring that there are no stagnant water that can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and ensuring that water drainage is not blocked by garbage, mud and tree branches; immediately seek treatment if experiencing symptoms of illness; prioritize the safety of children by ensuring they are not exposed to floodwater; avoid entering flooded rooms or spaces if there is still electricity and avoid touching electrical cables or wires that have fallen nearby or into floodwater; for those with wounds and skin diseases or those with chronic health problems, it is advisable to avoid exposure to floodwater as dirty floodwater can cause infection; and, for patients with chronic diseases, ensure that they have an adequate supply of medicine.
